How Many Working Days Are in 2027? US Calendar and Monthly Breakdown

SEO title: Working Days in 2027: 249 or 261? US Monthly Table

Meta description: See 2027 working days by month: 261 Monday-Friday weekdays or 249 after standard federal observed holidays. Check every month's total and counting rules.

Quick Answer: The 2027 calendar contains 261 Monday-Friday weekdays. Subtract the 12 observed holiday dates that fall inside 2027 on the standard U.S. federal-employee calendar, and 249 working days remain. The twelfth exclusion is Friday, December 31, 2027, which OPM treats as the observed New Year's Day holiday for Saturday, January 1, 2028. If you count only the 11 holidays shown under OPM's 2027 heading, you get 250 instead. Federal Reserve Banks follow a different Saturday-holiday rule, so 249 is not a universal U.S. banking or employer total.

These figures cover January 1 through December 31, 2027, inclusive, and assume Saturday and Sunday are the weekly days off. The federal figure is a date-counting model for most employees on a regular Monday-Friday federal schedule, not an individual timesheet or a legal definition for every American workplace. The monthly table below uses the Office of Personnel Management holiday schedules for 2027 and the observed New Year's Day from the 2028 section. For the full dated list alongside this count, use the site's 2026-2027 federal holidays reference.

The adjusted column subtracts only observed federal weekday holidays falling within each month. It does not subtract vacation, sick leave, a company's extra days off or state holidays. The final column multiplies the adjusted count by eight hours, a planning assumption rather than a claim about anyone's actual paid or worked hours.

March has 23 Monday-Friday weekdays and no OPM observed holiday. April has 22 and none. August also has 22 and none. These months are straightforward if your workplace follows the standard federal list: their weekday and adjusted working-day counts are identical.

January has 21 weekdays but only 19 after New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. November has 22 weekdays and 20 federal-schedule working days because Veterans Day and Thanksgiving both fall on Thursdays. December is where the annual arithmetic is easiest to miss: it has 23 weekdays, but Christmas is observed on December 24 and the following year's New Year's Day is observed on December 31, leaving 21.

A monthly table should always reconcile to the year. Adding the twelve weekday entries gives 261. Adding the federal holiday exclusions gives 12. Subtracting them gives 249, while the 8-hour column totals 1,992 hours.

Which working-day total should you use?

The phrase "business day" has more than one practical meaning. Select the rule that matches the question you are trying to answer, then use that rule for every month and deadline. Switching definitions between January and December is how annual totals become inconsistent.

AssumptionWeekdays countedUse it when
Weekdays only, no holidays261You want every Monday to Friday on the 2027 calendar.
OPM standard observed holidays249You use the usual Monday-Friday federal employee holiday schedule, including Dec 31.
OPM dates from the 2027 list only250You deliberately exclude 2027-listed holidays but retain Dec 31, 2027 as a workday.
Federal Reserve Banks holiday operations252You are planning around the Federal Reserve Bank published holiday rules; not a guarantee that a particular bank is open.
Employer-specific scheduleVariableYou have additional holidays, PTO, company shutdown days or a nonstandard workweek.

The third line, 250, is not a mathematical error. It is the result you get if you copy only OPM's 2027 holiday table and never look at its 2028 section. That may also match an employer that actually schedules December 31 as a working Friday. It is not the full 2027 count under the standard federal observed-holiday policy.

For payroll or staffing, your employer's approved holiday calendar takes priority over a public reference count. For a payment that depends on financial-system processing, check the relevant bank or clearing-network rules instead of assuming the federal employee calendar applies.

What counts as a working day in this article?

A weekday is any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, regardless of whether an office is open. That definition produces 261 dates in 2027. The year starts on a Friday and ends on a Friday, so there are 53 Fridays, 52 of every other weekday and 104 weekend days.

A federal-schedule working day here is one of those weekdays after excluding the observed holiday dates in OPM's schedule for most federal employees who ordinarily work Monday through Friday. An actual employee with a different workweek or an alternative schedule can have different "in lieu of" holiday arrangements. OPM explains those cases separately in its in-lieu-of holiday guidance.

An employer working day is whatever that organization's operating schedule defines. Some private offices close on federal holidays; others do not. Some add the Friday after Thanksgiving, state-specific holidays or a year-end shutdown. Count those dates only when they genuinely apply to the workforce or project you are planning.

A bank processing day is another category. The Federal Reserve Banks follow a published holiday schedule that differs from the standard federal employee observance when the holiday itself falls on a Saturday. This makes the Federal Reserve Bank operating-day count 252 weekdays in 2027, not 249. It still does not guarantee that every branch, credit union, market or payment product will operate on every one of those dates.

The first eleven dates appear in OPM's 2027 holiday list. The final one appears at the top of the 2028 list because it observes New Year's Day 2028. Although the heading says 2028, the observed date itself is in 2027 and must be deducted from a 2027 calendar-year total if you use the standard federal policy.

Three listed observances are moved from their commemorative weekend dates. Juneteenth falls on Saturday, June 19, so its federal observed day is Friday, June 18. Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4, so it is observed Monday, July 5. Christmas falls on Saturday, December 25, and is observed Friday, December 24. The next New Year's Day is also a Saturday, creating the December 31 observance.

OPM uses the statutory name "Washington's Birthday" for the February holiday even though many employers and state calendars call it Presidents' Day. The name does not change its February 15, 2027 observed date in this calculation.

Why December 31, 2027 changes the answer

January 1, 2028 falls on a Saturday. For most regular Monday-Friday federal employees, OPM's policy moves a Saturday holiday to the preceding Friday. That Friday is December 31, 2027. The 2028 New Year's Day observance therefore consumes a weekday in the previous calendar year.

This is an ordinary calendar boundary issue, not a special extra holiday invented for 2027. OPM's 2028 holiday schedule explicitly starts with "Friday, December 31" for New Year's Day. A total based on observed days within the calendar year must include holidays whose official name belongs to the next year.

You can check the difference in one line: 261 weekdays minus the 11 dates on OPM's 2027 list equals 250. Subtract December 31 as well, and the result is 249. If your employer stays open December 31, do not remove that day simply because federal employees generally observe it.

This also affects year-end planning. A project deadline based on five federal-schedule business days after December 22 is Thursday, December 30, not Friday, December 31. A deadline using Federal Reserve Bank operating weekdays can land on a different day because the banks are open December 24, and also December 31, under their published rule.

Federal holidays and Federal Reserve Bank holidays are not identical

The Federal Reserve Board's K.8 holiday schedule says that when a holiday falls on Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches remain open the preceding Friday. The Board of Governors, by contrast, is closed. When the holiday falls on Sunday, the Reserve Banks and the Board close the following Monday.

That rule changes three Fridays in 2027. Federal employees on the standard OPM schedule generally have June 18, December 24 and December 31 off as observed holidays. Federal Reserve Banks and Branches remain open on those three Fridays. Subtracting only the nine weekdays when Reserve Banks close gives 252 operating weekdays out of the 261 Monday-Friday dates.

July 5 is not one of the exceptions. Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4, and the following Monday is a Federal Reserve Bank holiday as well as an OPM observed holiday. The Federal Reserve's policy for a Sunday holiday differs from its Saturday treatment.

This distinction matters to anyone checking an ACH timing assumption, a banking cutoff or a payment deadline. The Federal Reserve Financial Services schedule is more relevant to its own services than an office holiday list, and individual providers can impose additional cutoffs. A bank branch being open is not the same claim as a particular transfer being available for processing at every hour.

For a personal office calendar, the nine-closure banking rule should not replace your company's holiday policy. For a banking calculation, using the 249-day federal employee total may incorrectly discard three days when Federal Reserve Banks are operating.

How to count business days between two dates

Before counting, decide whether the first and last dates are included. "From January 1 through January 31" usually includes both endpoints. "Five business days after December 22" normally begins with the next eligible business day, so December 22 itself is not day one.

Then choose the holiday rule. Start with every Monday-Friday date inside the interval and subtract each excluded holiday only once. If a holiday is already on a weekend and your rule does not observe it on a weekday, there is no additional weekday to remove. Do not subtract the original weekend date and its observed replacement from a weekday count.

Here are checked examples using the standard OPM calendar unless the row explicitly says Federal Reserve Banks.

2027 counting scenarioResultWhy
January 1 through January 31, inclusive1921 weekdays minus Jan 1 and Jan 18.
November 22 through November 26, inclusive4Five weekdays minus Thanksgiving on Thu, Nov 25.
December 24 through December 31, inclusive4Six weekdays, minus Dec 24 and Dec 31 under OPM.
October 1 through December 31, inclusive6166 weekdays minus one October, two November, and two December holidays.
Five business days after Dec 22, excluding start, OPM ruleThu, Dec 30Dec 23, then Dec 27-30; skips Dec 24 and Dec 31.
Five Federal Reserve Bank operating weekdays after Dec 22Wed, Dec 29Dec 23, 24, and 27-29; banks are open Dec 24.

The two December deadline results look close but are based on different exclusions. Under OPM, December 24 is not counted; under the Federal Reserve Bank schedule, it is. Both calculations start counting on December 23 and exclude the start date of December 22.

For a multi-month or cross-year interval, the same logic applies: advance through actual dates, skip Saturday and Sunday, and consult the observed-holiday schedule for the relevant year. Do not simply divide a year's working-day total by twelve when the result needs to be accurate for a particular month.

Using a date calculator without changing the rules

A working-day calculator should let you choose the beginning and ending dates, include or exclude the start or end date, and specify which holidays are excluded. A calculator that counts weekdays only may be correct for one task and wrong for a federal holiday deadline. Inspect its settings before using the result.

For the site's date tools, an add/subtract tool should handle "five working days after this date," while a duration tool should handle "how many eligible days between these dates?" Link those tools only after confirming they actually support the holiday set and boundary rules you intend to use. A generic date-difference result must not be described as a federal business-day calculation if it only counts calendar days. Our date calculators and calendar generator handle standard date arithmetic; check each tool's holiday settings before treating a result as an OPM business-day count.

You can also use the downloadable monthly CSV to import these fixed 2027 totals into a spreadsheet. Its columns keep weekdays, OPM exclusions and Federal Reserve Bank closures separate, so the user can choose the applicable assumption instead of treating a single total as universal.

Working hours in 2027 on an eight-hour schedule

At eight hours per working day, 261 weekdays produce a planning baseline of 2,088 hours before holidays. The standard 249-day OPM-adjusted schedule produces 1,992 hours before personal leave and other adjustments. An employer that excludes eleven weekdays, leaving 250 workdays, gets 2,000 scheduled hours at the same eight-hour assumption.

Those values are capacity estimates, not records of hours worked. They do not account for paid leave, sick days, overtime, breaks, part-time schedules or hours lost to a shutdown. Nor should 1,992 be presented as the number of hours any particular employee must work or be paid for.

If you have ten full-day PTO dates that fall on otherwise eligible federal-schedule working days, your personal availability would be 239 days. At eight hours each, that would leave 1,912 hours of planned availability, assuming the leave dates do not overlap holidays. This can be useful for workload planning, but it is not a substitute for your employer's leave and pay rules.

The U.S. Department of Labor notes that the Fair Labor Standards Act generally does not require employers to pay for time not worked on holidays or vacations. Specific employment terms and other applicable rules may differ. Use the annual figures to budget staff capacity, not to infer that a federal holiday automatically grants paid leave in a private-sector job.

Monthly scheduling problems the annual total can hide

The same annual total can support quite different monthly workloads. February has 19 federal-schedule workdays, while March has 23. Assigning equal monthly targets without checking the calendar can quietly give March a larger set of available days than February.

A company with one report due on the final working day of every month should use the last eligible date, not always the last weekday. In December, Friday the 31st is a weekday but is excluded under the standard federal schedule, so Thursday, December 30 is the last such working day. A Reserve Bank-based schedule, by contrast, includes Friday the 31st as an operating weekday.

Quarterly planning shows the same issue. October, November and December have 66 weekdays in total, but five OPM observed holidays fall inside that quarter, leaving 61 federal-schedule working days. If your organization also closes on the Friday after Thanksgiving, there are 60 under that additional assumption, provided that Friday is not already in the holiday list.

When a supplier gives a turnaround stated in business days, confirm which calendar the supplier uses. One company may exclude Veterans Day; another may stay open. A reference table can tell you which dates exist, but the agreed business-day definition determines the contractual or operational deadline.

Does the United States require every business to close on these holidays?

No. The OPM calendar addresses federal employee observances. It does not set a single operating calendar for shops, professional services, private employers or every bank branch. The Department of Labor's holiday-pay guidance explains that the FLSA does not generally require payment for time not worked on federal holidays; other applicable law, agreements and employer policies can affect a particular workplace.

That is why the headline uses both 261 and 249 rather than labelling 249 the number of business days for the whole country. One figure is an objective weekday count. The other is a transparent count after a specified holiday policy. Federal Reserve Bank operations provide a third, different comparison.

For ordinary trip planning, school timetables or event dates, a monthly calendar can help locate dates and weekdays. For deadline counting, use a verified business-day tool or the written inclusion rules above.

Frequently Asked Questions

11 questions answered

How many working days are there in 2027?

There are 261 Monday-Friday weekdays in 2027. If you subtract the 12 observed federal-employee holidays that land inside the calendar year, including December 31 for New Year's Day 2028, the total is 249. A different employer or banking calendar can produce a different number.

Why do some calendars say 250 working days in 2027?

OPM's 2027 heading lists eleven observed holidays, and 261 minus eleven is 250. But OPM places the observed New Year's Day for January 1, 2028 on Friday, December 31, 2027, under its 2028 heading. Include that additional weekday in a calendar-year federal count and you get 249.

How many working days are in January 2027?

January has 21 weekdays. New Year's Day falls on Friday, January 1, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 18. After those two OPM holidays, 19 federal-schedule working days remain.

Which months have the most working days in 2027?

March has 23 federal-schedule working days, the highest monthly total under the assumptions used here. April and August each have 22. The other months have fewer after the holiday adjustments.

Are there 250 business days in 2027?

There can be, if the calendar excludes the eleven holidays from OPM's 2027 list but treats December 31 as a working day. It is not the complete standard federal-employee count for all observed holidays inside the calendar year, which is 249. Federal Reserve Banks have 252 operating weekdays under their published Saturday-holiday rule.

Does December 31, 2027 count as a holiday?

For most federal employees on a regular Monday-Friday schedule, yes. January 1, 2028 falls on Saturday, so New Year's Day is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. Federal Reserve Banks and Branches remain open that Friday under a different published rule, and private employers choose their own applicable calendar.

Do federal holidays count as working days?

They count as weekdays if they fall Monday through Friday. They are removed only when calculating a working-day total that excludes them. Under the federal-employee method used in this article, the twelve observed weekday dates are excluded; under a weekdays-only method, none is removed.

How many working hours are there in 2027?

At a hypothetical eight hours per day, 249 federal-schedule working days equal 1,992 scheduled hours. The 261 weekdays before holiday exclusions equal 2,088 hours. Actual work hours vary with employer schedules, part-time work, leave and overtime.

Is the Friday after Thanksgiving a federal holiday in 2027?

No, Friday, November 26 is not an OPM-listed federal holiday in 2027. Thanksgiving itself is Thursday, November 25. A company may nevertheless close on Friday under its own policy, in which case that extra date should be excluded from that company's business-day calculation.

Does 2027 have 53 weeks?

No, 2027 has 365 days, equal to 52 complete seven-day weeks plus one day. Because January 1 and December 31 are both Fridays, the calendar contains 53 Fridays. That does not make it a 53-week year in the ordinary 365-day count.

Are Federal Reserve Bank business days the same as federal employee workdays?

No. Federal Reserve Banks and Branches open on the Friday preceding a Saturday holiday, even though the Federal Reserve Board of Governors closes. In 2027 this affects June 18, December 24 and December 31. Under the published Reserve Bank holiday operations, 252 weekdays remain after exclusions, compared with 249 under the OPM employee observance rule.
