The table deliberately starts with 2027-W01 rather than January 1. The first three calendar dates of January are not missing. They are part of 2026-W53, which is shown separately in the boundary table below. The year-end crosses into January 2028 for the same reason: all seven days of 2027-W52 retain the 2027 week-year label.
Why January 1-3, 2027 are in week 53 of 2026
January 1, 2027 is a Friday. That Friday belongs to the Monday-Sunday week running from December 28, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Its Thursday is December 31, 2026, so ISO assigns the entire week to 2026. Since 2026 has 53 ISO weeks, the label is 2026-W53.
The next Monday, January 4, begins 2027-W01. Its Thursday, January 7, is in 2027. This is why the first 2027 ISO week begins three days after New Year's Day, even though the civil calendar started on January 1.
The week-year boundary, date by date
| Date | ISO week-year and week | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dec 28, 2026 | 2026-W53 | Monday of the final ISO week of 2026 |
| Jan 1, 2027 | 2026-W53 | Friday; the Thursday of its week is Dec 31, 2026 |
| Jan 3, 2027 | 2026-W53 | Sunday ending the previous ISO week-year |
| Jan 4, 2027 | 2027-W01 | First Monday of ISO 2027 |
| Jan 7, 2027 | 2027-W01 | First Thursday of ISO 2027 |
| Dec 31, 2027 | 2027-W52 | Friday in the final ISO week |
| Jan 2, 2028 | 2027-W52 | Sunday that completes ISO 2027 |
This is the main trap when importing dates into a spreadsheet, choosing reporting weeks or naming a work folder. A file labeled 2027-W01 refers to January 4-10, while a file labeled 2026-W53 covers the New Year's weekend at the start of 2027.
If you group transactions by a calendar-year field extracted from the date, January 1 is in 2027. If you group the same transaction by ISO week-year, it is in 2026. Both can be correct because they answer different questions. Store the full week-year and week number rather than the two-digit week number alone.
How ISO 8601 week numbers work
An ISO week always begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. Week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday, which is also the week containing January 4. The rule ensures that a whole week receives one week-year label rather than being split between December and January.
Most ISO week-years have 52 complete weeks. Some have 53. The additional week is not an invented week or an eighth day; it is the consequence of how a 365-day or 366-day calendar lines up with seven-day weeks. Calendar year 2026 is a 53-week ISO year, while ISO 2027 has 52.
The week label has two independent parts: an ISO week-year and a two-digit week number. In the full week-date notation 2027-W01-1, the last 1 is Monday. 2027-W01-7 is Sunday, January 10. This format is less ambiguous than writing "week one," which can refer to different ranges under different software settings.
A useful check is to find the Thursday. If that Thursday falls in December 2026, the week belongs to ISO 2026. If it falls in January 2027, the week belongs to ISO 2027. You do not need to count weeks manually once you apply that rule.
Does the United States use different week numbers?
There is no single universal U.S. week-number convention. Many U.S. wall calendars display Sunday as the first day of the week, but that visual choice alone does not specify how to assign week 1. Different payroll systems, applications and reporting tools may define the first week differently.
A common Excel convention is WEEKNUM(date,1): the week begins on Sunday and week 1 contains January 1. For January 1, 2027, that produces week 1 of 2027. WEEKNUM(date,2) changes the first day to Monday but still uses Excel's first-January-week numbering, not the ISO first-Thursday rule. ISOWEEKNUM(date) gives the ISO number; the ISO week-year may differ from the calendar year near New Year.
Python's date.isocalendar() returns the ISO week-year, week and weekday together. This matters for the opening days of 2027: date(2027, 1, 1).isocalendar() returns (2026, 53, 5), meaning Friday of 2026-W53. Using the ordinary calendar year alongside the ISO week number would create the misleading combination "2027 week 53."
If a colleague says a deadline is "week 1," ask which system their team uses. On this particular New Year, different conventions produce genuinely different labels for the same day.
Week-number examples for planning and reporting
A project that starts Monday, January 4 and closes Friday, January 8 belongs entirely to 2027-W01. A weekly status meeting on Friday, January 1 belongs to 2026-W53, even if everyone describes it as a 2027 meeting by calendar date.
The same year boundary matters at the other end. Friday, December 31, 2027 belongs to 2027-W52. That week continues through Sunday, January 2, 2028. A year-end inventory report grouped by ISO week might therefore include January 1 and January 2, 2028 in its final 2027 week; a report grouped strictly by civil dates will not.
If you use week numbers for a sprint, label it with both the week code and date range. 2027-W12 (Mar 22-28) is harder to misinterpret than "week 12" and remains clear to colleagues who use a different regional calendar layout.
For multi-country reporting, record the local calendar date first, then calculate the ISO week under the agreed reporting policy. Time zones can change the local date of a timestamp. The ISO week function itself uses the date you feed into it, so two timestamp conversions straddling local midnight can naturally produce different week labels.
Weeks that cross month and quarter boundaries in 2027
ISO weeks are fixed seven-day spans, so several week ranges cross a month boundary. Week 13 runs from Monday, March 29 through Sunday, April 4. That puts the last three dates of March and the first four dates of April in one ISO week. A project dashboard grouped by "month" and another grouped by "week" can therefore assign the same work differently without either calculation being defective.
Week 26 runs from June 28 to July 4. Week 39 runs from September 27 to October 3. Both cross a calendar-quarter boundary as well as a month boundary. If your organization closes a quarter on June 30 or September 30, it needs a stated accounting rule for where to place the partial week's totals. ISO 8601 itself does not decide how a business divides revenue between financial quarters.
The holiday calendar is another separate layer. A public holiday occurring inside 2027-W26 does not alter the week's Monday start or Sunday end. Nor does a workplace with a four-day schedule redefine the ISO date interval. The week label identifies dates; your staffing or holiday policy determines which of those dates are workdays.
How to use the CSV without losing the ISO week-year
Import the CSV's iso_week field as text, keeping the 2027-W01 format intact. Keep the start and end fields as ISO-formatted dates rather than letting a spreadsheet silently interpret 01/04/2027 under a different country's day/month order. The file provides 2027-01-04 explicitly, so the order of month and day is not ambiguous.
If you merge this file into a larger dataset that includes December 2026, add the previous year's 2026-W53 interval separately. The 52-row file deliberately includes only ISO weeks that have the week-year 2027. It does not contain January 1-3 as independent rows, because those dates belong to the preceding ISO week-year.
For a practical deadline, you may still write "Friday, January 1, 2027" in a message. Week-year notation becomes valuable only when the reporting system needs a consistent weekly key. Keeping both the explicit date and ISO code is clearer than replacing every familiar date with a week number.
How to find the ISO week for any date
Use the site's week number calculator to look up a specific day. For monthly planning or printing a civil calendar, use the calendar generator. The calculator and the 52-week table answer different tasks: one finds the week of a selected day; the other supplies the full year of ranges.
If you are checking the date in a spreadsheet, Excel's ISO function is =ISOWEEKNUM(A1). To produce an unambiguous archive label, compute the ISO week-year as well. A bare week number can be misleading around New Year when the civil year and ISO year differ.
As a simple independent check, Python supports ISO weeks without third-party calendar packages: date.fromisocalendar(2027, 1, 1) yields January 4, 2027 and date.fromisocalendar(2027, 52, 7) yields January 2, 2028. This table was generated from those standard-library operations rather than typed by hand.
Printable calendar and CSV download
The supplied iso_weeks_2027.csv has one row for each numbered ISO 2027 week, including the week code and Monday/Sunday dates in YYYY-MM-DD format. Import it into Excel, Google Sheets or a scheduling system without trying to infer dates from a photograph of a calendar.
If you need a printable monthly view, open the site's calendar generator and check its current week-number and print options. Do not assume that switching the display to Monday-first also changes the week-numbering calculation: the option must explicitly identify ISO numbering to match the table above.
For event planning, the CSV is usually the safer handoff because it preserves exact start and end dates. A printed calendar is useful at a glance, but a row identified only by "week 1" still needs a documented counting rule if it is shared across teams.
The table also makes quarter handoffs easier to inspect. A week can cross a month or calendar quarter; an ISO week does not split itself because March becomes April. If a business requires weeks to align to month-end accounting, that is a separate fiscal-week design, not the ISO calendar.
