How week numbers work

The ISO 8601 standard defines week numbers used in most countries worldwide. Under this system, Week 1 of a year is the week that contains the first Thursday of January (equivalently, the week containing January 4th). This means that January 1st can sometimes fall in Week 52 or 53 of the previous year, and December 31st can sometimes fall in Week 1 of the next year.

ISO 8601 vs. other week numbering systems

The ISO standard defines Monday as the first day of the week. Some countries (notably the US, Canada, and parts of Asia) use Sunday as the first day, which can produce different week numbers for dates near the start or end of a year. This calculator uses the ISO 8601 standard, which is the internationally recognized system used by most governments, businesses, and software applications worldwide.

How many weeks are in a year?

Under ISO 8601, most years have 52 weeks. However, approximately every 5–6 years a year has 53 weeks. A year has 53 weeks if January 1st falls on a Thursday (in a common year) or on a Wednesday or Thursday (in a leap year). For example, 2020 and 2026 both have 53 weeks.
